Fifteen-year-old Tanvi Patri makes history at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics, becoming India's first female badminton silver medallist after saving five match points and narrowly losing a thrilling final against China's Zhang Yixin.
The final was played in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, on Thursday. Tanvi started strongly, winning the opening game 21-15. However, Zhang fought back in the second game, securing a 21-13 victory to level the contest and force a deciding game.
The third game turned into a closely fought battle, with both players competing for the gold medal. Despite Tanvi's determined comeback, Zhang eventually prevailed 26-24 to claim the title, leaving the Indian player with the silver medal.

The deciding game proved particularly challenging for Tanvi. Zhang established an early lead and went into the interval with an 11-7 advantage. The Chinese shuttler extended her lead to 19-10, appearing close to securing a comfortable victory.
However, Tanvi refused to give up. She collected consecutive points and steadily reduced the deficit. Zhang had five match points, but the Indian teenager saved all five to keep her hopes alive.
Tanvi then produced an impressive comeback to create three match points of her own. With the gold medal seemingly within reach, she had three opportunities to close out the match but could not convert any of them. Zhang regained control, won consecutive points and eventually secured the deciding game 26-24 to take the gold medal.

Her semi-final opponent was Japan's Yuzuno Watanabe. Tanvi won the opening game 21-14, but Watanabe responded by taking the second game 21-11.
The deciding game was closely contested, with Tanvi maintaining her composure under pressure. She eventually secured a 21-19 victory to book her place in the final. The semi-final match lasted 54 minutes.
